Commemorating the Inflation Reduction Act: A Lifeline for Insulin Users

On August 13th, the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) joined the White House Office of Public Engagement to celebrate the anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This landmark legislation has brought much-needed relief to millions by capping insulin costs at $35 per month’s supply under Medicare Part D and similar limits under Part B.

The event highlighted the IRA’s impact with remarks from Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and a panel moderated by CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. The discussion featured patients who rely on insulin and healthcare providers, illustrating the importance of these changes.

Representing BWHI, Senior Director Dr. Zsanai Epps emphasized the act’s significance: “Policies like the Inflation Reduction Act are lifesaving due to the toll that unaffordable medication has on the lives of everyday people. A $35 cap on insulin may not be $0, but it’s far more manageable than the $1,000/month some were paying before.”

The IRA is a crucial step forward, helping many avoid the difficult choice between health and essential living expenses. While more work remains to ensure complete healthcare accessibility, this legislation marks significant progress toward a more equitable system.
